Types Of Carbon Water Filters

Relying on specialists in water related problems and resorting to them to identify the type of problem you confront with is the best thing to do before buying a water filter. A professional lab will tell you within a short period of time the nature of the problem and whether you need to purchase carbon water filters, an iron water filter or others. There is no point in spending a significant amount of money without consulting a professional first, because there's a big chance you'll regret your decision.

Water equipment is necessary but this doesn't mean that you have to pay a lot of money on a water system. Before you decide to purchase any equipment, we suggest testing your water and making sure that the system you opt for will treat your problem adequately. As long as you consult with water quality professionals and equipment suppliers, you will be able to identify with their help the best system that meets your individual needs. Once you have identified the type and the level of contaminants, you will be able to choose the water system you need.

All carbon water filters remove organic compounds and the effectiveness of such filters depends on the amount of carbon in the unit and how long the water remains there. If the water remains in contact with the filter medium for a longer period of time the more impurities are removed. However, we suggest replacing carbon filters cartridges when the problems of taste and odor reappear. The cartridges of carbon water filters can range from a few dollars to several hundreds and there are units that require professional installation. The most popular types of carbon filters, based on their location in the plumbing system, are: faucet mount, in-line, line bypass and point of entry.

The first category of carbon water filters is usually cheaper and it is attached to the faucet where the drinking water comes out, containing a small amount of carbon. The in-line filters are installed behind the kitchen sink, treating only cold water running from the tap, while warm, and hot water will remain untreated. The line bypass filters are also attached to the cold water supply line and the carbon water filters last longer because it treats only the water that is being used. The last category of filters treat all the water that enters the home and it is great for the treatment of volatile organic compounds that evaporate into the air. These are the most efficient filters but also the most expensive ones as far as cost and maintenance are concerned.

Another frequent problem is the contamination of water with iron; besides causing an unpleasant metallic taste, the iron also causes staining of fixtures and laundry. Unfortunately, an iron water filter can be quite expensive, requiring significant monitoring and maintenance but if you do a little research you just might find something cost-effective. Some advantages of the iron water filter are: the cost of competitive iron treatment systems, easy to replace cartridge, no backwashing required and not adding harmful products to the drinking water.

Furthermore, the iron water filter prevents the staining of laundry and plumbing system, the life of the filter is relatively long, the installation is simple and it doesn't take a lot of time and its size is quite small so it doesn't require a lot of storage. As you can see, each water filter is meant to treat a certain problem, so it is up to specialist to decide what type of filter you need.

How to Install a Water Filter and not Get Water Damage

If your drinking water is not as clear as it used to be, maybe it’s time to replace the water filter or add one. To do this without flooding out your home, consider this question. What is Teflon tape? If you know the answers get started this weekend, on the new filter. If you think Teflon tape is something you cook with, well maybe you should call a plumber to install the filter.

When replacing your existing filter try to select the same model as before, this should cause all the existing fittings to be the same size and simplify the connection to the replacement filter.

If you have decided to change models read the manufactures directions before starting the job. You may need to replace washer or use something that is new to you, better to understand this before and not after.

The first thing to do is turn off the water to the home. Whether you are swapping out an under counter or whole house filter the process is about the same. Once the water is off you can open a sink faucet and drain the remaining water from the water line and filter. You might be surprised at the amount of water the filter and lines are holding. Draining this line will reduce any spillage as you disconnect the filter.

If your filter is connected to the ice maker water line behind your refrigerator, be extra careful when you pull out the refrigerator, so you do not rupture the water line. Just pull slowly, straight forward till you can see behind the unit and get in behind it.

Have your tools ready and close by, perhaps laying on a towel or something protecting the counter top. Your wife will really appreciate this. Also, have a container close by, big enough to put the removed filter in after you have disconnected it. This step will save a lot of wipe up.

O.K. its time to disconnect the water filter. Take a firm hold of the unit and selecting the correct size wrench, undo the nuts that connect either side of the unit. Place the old water filter into your bucket.

Now you can install the new water filter. Since you reviewed the directions that came with the new filter, you should have all the washers and connection parts right there and ready.

Remember that Teflon tape, well now is the time to use it. Wrap a small amount of Teflon tape around the threads of the filter and tighten the nuts down to form a snug fit. You don’t have to over tighten it, just sung and firm. Often this means tightening to a point where it gets hard to turn the wrench any more.

Now, turn the water back on to the home. And, let it run for a while; a few minutes is fine. What you are doing is filling up the filter and washing out the water line. Often the connections will release small amounts of dirt after you loosing them and tightening them.

After the water coming out of the faucet is clear and you have flushed out all of the dirt, turn off the faucet and stop for a minute. Pay close attention to the connections on the water filter. What you are looking for is leaking or drips. If it is dripping or leaking, you may need to tighten up the nuts connection the filter to the water line. Wait five minutes and if you have no drips, you’re done.

Remember, read the directions, flush the water line, use Teflon tape and check for drips. And, you should be able to avoid flooding and water damage.
