Why can't I print to socket with an external jetdirect, but I can with an internal jetdirect?
Our mainframe guys are using an AS400 system and I am a Windows guy but I need to find out why they are having this issue.
External JetDirect devices are controlled by software installed on your Windows machine, similar to how most cheap ink jet printers are.
What kind of printer is it? Certain printers that HP makes are WIndows-only, even with JetDirect. Some are Windows and Mac OS only. 90% of the LaserJet printers that have model numbers ending in "n", however (such as the 2420tn, 4000n, and so on) work just fine with a UNIX environment. Hate to say it, but you may need a different printer with built-in networking.
Most other manufacturers network printers (such as Brother, Konica-Minolta, and Epson) are UNIX compatible as well, so unless your company has a contract with HP, don't limit yourself to just HP.
