MT-RJ (Mechanical Transfer Registered Jack) As A Small Connector Option

The MT-RJ (Mechanical Transfer Registered Jack) is normally used in communication systems within buildings.  It is a small form-factor connector designed as a jack and looks similar to an RJ-45 telephone connector.  As such, it is often confused with an actual telephone connector due to this similar look.  The latch adapter can be attached to the MT-RJ but is not mandatory for use and can be left out as the MT-RJ easily attaches and detaches from the components' connecting panel.  Being smaller in size as compared to other types of connectors, it uses up less space and affords more port density.

There are two variations of the MT-RJ.  The pinned version, also known as the male connector, has two small guide pins at its end.  Normally made of stainless steel, these pins are parallel to the two optic fibers protected within the ferrule inside the cable.  The no-pinned version which has two holes is known as the female connector.  As nature intended, the mating of the male and female ends then connects the communication loop between cable, panel and patch cord.

Since the MT-RJ (Mechanical Transfer Registered Jack) has two pins, it supports multimode connection.  Although cables are usually terminated using the pre-polished/splice method at factory, multimode connectors can be installed in the field after the cables have been pulled and properly laid out.  The reason for later termination is to avoid errors due to incorrect cable lengths.  Pre-installed terminators also need to be carefully handled during the cable installation exercise.  Hence, cable manufacturers normally provide protective sleeves to cover the connectors from damage.  Various types of terminations can be done on multimode fibers, each having its own set of advantages and disadvantages.  Whether to terminate on the field using whichever method, it is best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure quality results.

Cable manufacturers produce these multimode connectors in a variety of colors.  Some include an extra plug for testing purposes.  By requiring no epoxy and polish, it allows easier termination and faster job completion.  Since there are numerous types of connectors as well as components to be connected together, manufacturers also produce cables with different connector heads to allow inter-connection.  There are cables which sport MT-RJ connectors at one end and a variation of LC, SC and ST connectors on the opposite end.  This then enables a single cable to be used instead of having to purchase two cables and an adapter in between them.  Being a more economical option, it also causes less clutter in the computer room.  The last thing anyone wants is to wade through spaghetti of cables in the process of installations and trouble-shooting.
