RJ45 to RJ11 Patch Cable diagram?
Hi,
Can anyone please let me know where I can find cabling diagram to connect my linksys WAG200G ADSL wireless router (RJ11) to the internet connection socket (RJ45) provided by my university?
Here's the scenario, I am trying to setup a wireless home network so that I can use two or more laptops simultaneously and connect to the internet. My university provided me with a fixed IP internet connection that comes in the form of a RJ45 socket in the wall. The router I have will only work if I connect through the DSL port, which only accepts RJ11. I talked to the support guys and they told me I need a patch cable with RJ11 in one end and RJ45 on the other.
The ones I ordered via internet didn't work so far, but I think this may be due to incorrect cabling/patching. I can prepare one myself if I can get hold of a diagram.

Your Linksys unit is a Dsl Modem/gateway with 4 ports. This takes a DSL signal and converts it into a usable internet signal that your PC can use. Your school has already provided you with an internet-ready connection.
What you really need is a router/switch which takes the already-converted signal and splits it up into multiple connections (like a hub).
Luckily, you can use your DSL modem like a switch (hub). AND there's no need for some so-called RJ11 patch converter.
Instead of plugging into the DSL port, plug your RJ45 cable into one of the 4 numbered ports and your PC(s) into one of the other 3 ports. It will (should) split your fixed IP signal into 3 additional IPs. You'll have one less port than if you had a normal router/switch, but at least you won't have to go out & buy new equipment. By default, it should be set to DHCP which means it will issue new IP addresses whenever you plug a PC into one of its ports or connect wirelessly.

What is a Patch Panel?
Also known as a jackfield or patch bay, a patch panel is a panel that contains multiple cable connections. The back of the panel has wiring or other connective cabling that runs to disparate equipment. The front of the patch panel allows easy access to connect the different equipment through the use of short patch cables. One common example of this concept was before automatic telephone switching became widespread; early telephone operators would connect callers to their intended parties manually by plugging in a cable on the switchboard.
Uses for Patch Panels
Patch panels are used in a variety of fields and applications. Telephone and cable companies built patch panel cabinets in neighborhoods that allow their roaming technicians to make a quick change at the cabinet to deploy or disconnect service to your home. Auditoriums and stage theaters usually have patch panels connecting the various audio-visual components to aid with performances and presentations. Radio stations, recording studios, television broadcast studios, and other media-heavy services require extensive abilities to connect and route data and media to different devices as a part of their productions. Local Area Networks and larger networks such as the global internet where you are reading this also make extensive use of patch panels and other types of connection terminals.
Alternatives to Patch Panels
The patch panel implies a connection of a transitory nature, where the connection can be easily redirected or completely disconnected. There are other connection matrices of a more permanent nature, such as the breakout box, punch box, distribution frame, and termination panel. While they perform very similar functions, these interfaces are usually of a more permanent nature because they involve direct wiring to terminals instead of plugs and removable cabling.
