Powerline Wireless
Anyone have experience of using powerline devices for a home network, rather than wireless (for Linux)?
For a number of reasons, I want to ditch Windows and run all my home machines on Ubuntu Linux.
However, I'm having compatibility problems with wifi cards, so would like to use a powerline arrangement, where the network is via internal mains electricity wiring of the house.
Has anyone tried this successfully, and does it work 'out of the box'?
Yes I bought a couple of powerline adapters and they do work out of the box and are operating system independent.
I tried using it for my netgear media streamer but the throughput was not high enough for media streaming. It would have been fine for general internet usage though
They come in various speeds and I found they work best if they are plugged into the same ring main, they will work at a lower speed the further the two are apart or on different circuits however.
